What is a lineal champion?

A lineal champion holds a title traced in an unbroken chain of wins back to a recognized starting champion.

A lineal champion is the person who beat the champion, who beat the champion before them, in an unbroken chain. The idea is simple: to be the champion, you beat the champion.

Why fans care

Belts and trophies can be awarded, stripped or created. A lineage cannot be handed out. It can only be won in competition. That makes it, for many fans, the purest claim to being the best.

Where lineages break

  • A champion retires while still holding the title
  • A champion moves to a different weight class or division
  • A governing body strips a champion over a rule dispute
  • Two rival organizations each crown their own winner

Restarting a line

When a line breaks, fans and historians often agree to restart it when the two top contenders meet. That agreement is informal, which is why lineal debates can run for years.
